Coming to Canada

Canada is a country in North America, a member of the G7 and a popular immigration destination for people around the world. On July 1, 2022, the country celebrated her 155th anniversary.  The country practices a system of parliamentary democracy and is a constitutional monarchy with the King of England, ably represented by the Governor General, as head of state. Having her national capital in Ottawa, Canada boasts of a large, diverse, immigrant population in addition to her indigenous peoples. She has welcomed several immigrants during her existence and continues to welcome immigrants from countries around the world.

Thankfully, there is a legal framework for coming to Canada. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is the government department saddled with the responsibility of Canadian Immigration and other functions.

Its responsibilities include:

  • selecting and welcoming new permanent and temporary residents and refugees;
  • issuance of Canadian passports and other travel documents;
  • helping newcomers integrate into the Canadian Society.

IRCC has several immigration programs such as Express Entry, Family sponsorship, Atlantic immigration program, Start-up visa, Agri-food pilot, Self-employed, rural and northern immigration pilot. The services offered also include temporary resident visas, work permits, and study permits. Provinces can also nominate candidates under the various provincial nomination programs.

The Department is guided by an important Canadian legislation pertaining to immigration known as Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) which is administered by the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration. This Act details the objectives of the government towards immigration and makes provision for various ways of immigrating to Canada as permanent residents. It also enumerates the criteria for eligibility and explains the rights and obligations of permanent residents. Most people can apply to immigrate to Canada unless they are inadmissible as described under the Act.
